The story behind the motif
Turn-of-the-century style staircase at Linnégatan 22, Östermalm in 1973.
Most of the properties in Östermalm in Stockholm were built between 1880-1930. Many of the apartments are therefore characterized by their substantial ceiling height and decorative details such as stucco and woodwork, as well as the staircase we see in the picture.
The first town plan for Östermalm was drawn up in 1640 and revolved around what we today call Östermalmstorg. During the 20th century, Östermalm developed into an area that is considered to have high social status and some of Scandinavia's highest apartment prices. Many leading people in business, administration and the entertainment industry live here.
