The story behind the motif

She has set out into the world under the protection of the moose bull Skutt. The forest raven has taken her clothes and the fairies her princess crown.
John Bauer is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses and he has had a great influence on Swedish folklore and storytelling. The painting was an illustration for the Tale of the moose bull Skutt and the little princess Tuvstarr by Helge Kjellin.
