The story behind the motif
Canvas with m painting from the naval battle in 1704 at Orford Ness on the English side on the northern part of the English Channel.
When the Swedish convoy of sailing ships passed an English squadron and refused to haul their pennant which is an honor at sea, the English chose to attack with their 9 ships and 430 guns.
The Swedish ships had received clear directives from Charles XII never to raise the flag of any foreign power as such a gesture was punishable by death. After 4 hours of fighting, the Swedes had to raise the flag for naval distress and were then captured by the English.
