The actress Ellen André posed for the work, but Manet did not make a portrait of her. In Nationalmuseum’s interpretation, she instead became the type of la Parisienne: the modern urban woman, both consumer and commodity herself in Paris’s emerging consumer culture.

The story behind the motif

A modern French woman in Paris in the 19th century. She is wearing a black dress with a marked waist and a draped tourniquet (a metal brace worn under the skirt at the back). The quality and style of the clothes reveal the woman's high social and economic status. The painting depicts the woman as a power factor and status symbol in 19th century France.

The artist behind the painting was Édouard Manet and sthe actress Ellen André was the model for it. Ellen was a popular model for many Impressionists during the 1870s, not least Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
