Prison Gave the Words Weight
The words were not intended as a timeless motto. Pankhurst spoke them in London on 14 July 1913, shortly after receiving a three-year sentence of penal servitude. That same year, the so-called Cat and Mouse Act was introduced, allowing hunger-striking prisoners to be released when seriously ill – and arrested again once they had recovered.

I would rather be a rebel than a slave - Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928).

Emmeline Pankhurst stands as a seminal figure in British history, a tenacious political activist and leader of the suffragette movement who tirelessly campaigned for women's suffrage. Although women in Great Britain were granted the right to vote in 1918, it wasn't until 1928 that they achieved voting equality with men, thanks to the efforts of Pankhurst and her comrades.

Recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, Emmeline Pankhurst was lauded for molding contemporary views on women's roles in society. Her legacy is marked by her ability to profoundly transform societal norms, ushering in irreversible changes and establishing a new paradigm.
