Amalfi is a beautiful coastal town in southern Italy. Worth was one of the foremost and most influential fashion houses of the 1800s and early 1900s. The designer behind the fashion house was called Charles Frederick Worth and came from England. He is considered by many fashion historians to be the father of haute couture.
The illustrator of this beautiful fashion image is called George Barbier. He was a very prominent artist from France celebrated not least by Vouge for his contribution to the world of fashion during the early 20th century.
Gazette du Bon Ton in which the illustration was published was one of the most influential and exclusive fashion magazines of its time. The newspaper bore witness to the carefree and flamboyant lifestyle of the privileged circles. Fashion was art and Paris its theater stage.
