The painting shows a portrait of the famous Swedish poet and musician Carl Michael Bellman. Bellman is usually regarded as one of Sweden's national poets. His poetry has been very important for later Swedish literature, and his importance for this has been compared to that of William Shakespeare for the English language. Bellman's most famous works are the poems Fredman's Epistles and Fredman's Songs.
Per Krafft the Elder was a Swedish artist during the 18th century, known for his portraits and historical paintings. During his lifetime, Krafft was one of Sweden's most sought-after court painters and was commissioned to portray both royalty and important persons from the Swedish nobility.
