The story behind the motif
Collier's, the national weekly is an American poster from 1916, preserved in the Boston Public Library's American Art Posters 1890–1920 collection. It was created during a period when magazine covers often functioned as small posters: with a distinct title, a concentrated image area, and a format designed to catch the eye immediately at the newsstand.
Here, Collier’s title and the subtitle The National Weekly are the very point of departure. The vertical format and the printed typography give the image a clear early-20th-century character and connect it to the visual world of the American weekly press. As wall art, it works both as a graphic print and as a historical trace of a time when the magazine cover was a natural part of the streetscape.
