When the Spice Belonged in the Pharmacy
The plate comes from Medical Botany, a British handbook that connected plant knowledge to the pharmacopoeias of London, Edinburgh and Dublin. The new edition appeared in three volumes in 1834–36 and contained 185 colour plates—an image archive from a time when spice plants also had an obvious place in the world of the pharmacy.
