When Europae was printed in 1574, it formed part of a new way of making map books. Abraham Ortelius had maps by different makers engraved in a uniform format and bound them with explanatory texts. In the atlas’s list of sources, he also named the cartographers on whom he relied – an unusually early form of cartographic credit.

The story behind the motif

Vintage poster with a fantastic map of Europe in 1574. The map was made by the cartographer, geographer and historian Abraham Ortelius.

On the detailed map we see all of Europe, with the countries and cities written in Latin.
