The story behind the motif
Field day – WPA recreation project, Dist. No. 2 is an American WPA poster from Illinois, designed by Beard in 1939 for the Federal Art Project within the Works Progress Administration. The poster advertises a sports day and uses the direct, easily legible visual communication that became a hallmark of many public posters of the period.
In the foreground stands a woman with a tennis racket, while dark silhouettes in the background suggest additional sports and activities. The vertical composition is structured with clear planes, figures in motion, and large lettering that gives the motif its decisive rhythm.
