The story behind the motif

Poster with the classic illustration Fluttering butterflies and caterpillars from the book European Butterflies and Moths by William Forsell Kirby, published in 1882.

The book is a comprehensive study of the butterflies and moths of Europe, and contains many colorful illustrations of these insects. 

This image depicts a group of white and yellow butterflies and their larvae. The illustration depicts the ecosystem where butterflies and caterpillars interact with plants. 

William Forsell Kirby (1844–1912) was an English entomologist and author. He was an expert on butterflies and moths and wrote several works that had a major impact on entomological science. The books "European Butterflies and Moths" are considered important contributions to the study of insect life during the 19th century.
