Christmas images on an assembly line
In 1911, Jenny Nyström signed a contract with Axel Eliasson's publishing house, requiring her to deliver a fixed number of watercolours each month as designs for cards. It was image production at an industrial pace—and through such prints, her Christmas world spread far beyond the art salons.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a classic Christmas motif by Jenny Nyström from 1890. A small child rides a sleigh pulled by a cat in a winter landscape. In the background we see elves carrying Christmas presents.

Jenny Nyström (1854-1946) was a Swedish artist and illustrator. She is best known for having given Santa a face in Sweden, mainly through her illustrations of Christmas cards. Jenny is today an artist whose nostalgic works bring many people back to the Christmas of their childhood.
