When the Façade Was Remade
In the 1890s, it was decided that the palace’s worn façades could no longer be patched. After studying the archives, the restoration sought to return the building to Tessin’s intended expression, including with reddish-brown plaster. The work was carried out in 1898–1902—an unusually rapid transformation for a royal palace.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph taken in 1890 at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. The photo is taken from an angle that gives a view of the castle and surrounding neighborhoods. You can see the Old Town in the background, including the Great Church with its high spire. In the picture, Strömmen is also visible, and there is a bridge that goes over the water towards Södermalm.
