An Extra Life at Sea
When the Naval Cadet Corps was disbanded in 1939, Jarramas might have been left at the naval shipyard. Instead, it continued sailing for several summers during the 1940s, now as a training vessel for students from the Royal Swedish Naval Academy and the Swedish Navy Seamen’s School.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage photograph depicting the full rigger Jarrama's in 1941 by Sjöberg. The photo captures an intense working moment on board the full rigger Jarrama's, where the sailors balance high on the raw sails while working to salvage sails.

The white uniforms stand in stark contrast to the dark ropes and masts that run criss-cross across the image, creating a graphic, almost sculptural pattern. Each man is deeply focused on his task, and their bodies follow the lines of the ship in a rhythmic interplay between man and rig.

The full rigger Jarrama's was a symbol of an era when sailing ships' craftsmanship, discipline and cooperation characterized life at sea. The photograph captures precisely this era-typical atmosphere, a world where work was both dangerous and skilled, and where all movements required precision, strength and confidence. It is a timeless motif that depicts the harsh but fascinating reality of sailor's life: a moment of concentration, courage and cooperation, captured high above the deck of one of Sweden's historic full-riggers.
