The Balloon Hero of the Siege
The pilot Claude Jules Duruof had already become one of the siege’s aviation heroes: on 20 September 1870, he escaped besieged Paris by balloon. Three years later, he and his wife rose into stormy weather, drifted away in the fog and were rescued at sea by an English fishing boat. The lithograph was signed on 6 June 1874.
