Canvas with the painting Näcken by Theodor Kittelsen from 1904 (Norwegian title: Nøkken ).

This image, well-known in Norway, where the skunk appears in a still dark pond in the evening, has shaped the perception of the skunk in Norway.

The skunk is a supernatural male water creature that mainly lives in rivers, streams, ponds and lakes inland. The figure is known from old Nordic folklore and poetry since Old Norse times, mainly from legends and folk songs from Norway and Sweden. The neck is an embodiment of the dangers associated with water and appears in a number of different guises. Often he tries in various ways to attract people to drown them.

Theodor Kittelsen is a Norwegian artist who, like the Swedish John Bauer, is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses. His works are still iconic in many Nordic homes, but even though he is celebrated as a national artist in Norway, he is hardly known outside of Scandinavia.
