A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Öland from the 19th century. In the coat of arms we see two deer against a blue background.
Öland's coat of arms was represented at Gustav Vasa's funeral procession in 1560, with an image of a deer. However, due to the similarities in the regional coats of arms between Åland and Öland, confusion often arose. This led to the establishment of a new regional coat of arms in 1884, described as "In a blue field two stags walking over each other, gold, and nine five-petalled roses, silver, in three rows". In the 1944 revision, however, the appearance of the deer was restored again.
Öland, Sweden's second largest island, has a history that stretches back to the Stone Age. The island has been a central place of trade and culture in the Baltic Sea region since the Iron Age, with rich archaeological finds such as burial mounds and rune stones. During the Middle Ages, agriculture and fishing flourished thanks to the island's strategic location. Öland is also known for Borgholm Castle, an important royal defense facility and residence until its destruction in 1806.
The text above the coat of arms reads: Coat of Arms of Öland. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
