The story behind the motif
Poster with a magical illustration from Elsa Beskow's saga Olle's ski trip which was published for the first time in 1907.
Olle has received a pair of skis as a Christmas present and sets out on his first skiing trip in the forest. In the forest he meets Uncle Rimfrost who takes him on an adventure through the enchanted landscape of winter.
In this motif, we see Olle and Uncle Rimfrost in front of the mighty King Bore, also called King Winter, who sits on his throne surrounded by icicles and two huge walruses. King Bore, the ruler of winter, is a symbol of winter cold and authority. Olle humbly bows before him, showing respect and submission to the power of winter.
This scene represents the culmination of Olle's meeting with winter's most powerful figures, where he gets to experience winter's grandeur and beauty up close.
Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
