An expedition with two plans
When the photograph was taken in 1910, the South Pole was still Amundsen’s secret. Fram had left Norway with an official plan to travel through the Arctic Ocean via the Bering Strait, but in Madeira he revealed to the crew that the course was instead set for Antarctica. Just over a year later, he reached the South Pole.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a photograph of the famous pioneer in polar research, Captain Roald Amundsen in 1910.

Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer, known for his expeditions to the polar regions. He led the first expedition to the South Pole in 1911 and was one of the first at the North Pole.

The photograph depicts Amundsen on the ship Fram during the preparations for a polar journey. He made expeditions to both the Arctic and Antarctic with Forward.
