The trail leads not to ancient Rome but to the United States in 1912. A similar formulation was printed then without a named author in the magazine The Youth’s Companion; the current wording circulated anonymously during the 1920s. It was not until 1999 that the quotation began to be attributed to Seneca.

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity - Seneca

Seneca, or Seneca the Younger, lived between 4 BC - 65 AD. and is a famous Roman philosopher, statesman and dramatist. Seneca was the fifth Roman emperor Nero's teacher, which meant a very influential position in the Roman Empire.

Seneca's work as a philosopher and writer of tragedies has gained great importance for posterity. During the Renaissance, Seneca's tragedies were seen as an ideal for drama and they had a great influence on Shakespeare, among others.
