The story behind the motif

The Sun Egg, which was published in 1932, is one of Elsa Beskow's most beloved fairy tales, where she takes the reader on a magical journey through the forest. The story revolves around a little fairy who one day finds a mysterious, large and golden object in the forest. Amazed and curious, she at first thinks she has found a sun egg – an egg that has fallen from the sun itself.

The river shows its find to the inhabitants of the forest. Together they try to figure out the egg's secret, while the fairy looks after it with great care. But soon the truth is revealed: the egg is actually an orange that has fallen from a cargo of fruit on a boat. The fairy, who is initially disappointed that it is not a real sun egg, learns that even everyday things can be full of magic and beauty.

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, whose works have become timeless classics in Swedish children's literature. With over 40 books filled with stories that combine text and image in a unique way, she has captured the hearts of generations of readers. The Sun Egg is an excellent example of her ability to weave together reality and fantasy in a way that inspires and engages children and adults of all ages.
