The story behind the motif
Summer Siesta from 1885 is an oil painting by Johan Krouthén, the Linköping artist who became admired for his luminous landscapes and depictions of life outdoors. The painting is part of the collections of the Östergötland Museum and belongs to the artist’s early period, when plein-air painting and the careful study of light and atmosphere shaped his visual world.
Beneath the tree canopies, a woman rests in a hammock, while a man sits on a blanket in the grass. Between the trunks, the view opens onto shimmering water, low shores, and a bright summer sky. It is an everyday moment, yet Krouthén constructs it with careful attention to the shadows in the grass, the patterned skirt, and the sunlit landscape. The gentle diagonal of the hammock lends the composition both movement and repose.
