When the Horses Were Phased Out
Around 1910, the Stockholm Fire Brigade began replacing its horse-drawn vehicles with motorised ones. The transition was swift: a few years later the horses had been sold, and in 1915 the brigade received its first motor fire engine – an early step towards the modern emergency service.

The story behind the motif

Fire truck and firefighters at Strömkajen in front of the Palace in Stockholm. The fire truck is probably a Scania Vabis. It is probably the fire department's first motor sprayer photographed on July 30, 1918.
