Storm on the Sea of Galilee

$59.00 Regular price $83.00
Size Size chart 30x40

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee is an oil painting from 1633 by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. The painting was formerly at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, USA, but was stolen in 1990 and has not been found. It is Rembrandt's only marine painting.

The painting shows Jesus and the disciples during a storm on the Sea of Galilee, as described in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of Mark.

In the painting we see a biblical scene where nature is set against human weakness - both physical and spiritual. Battling a sudden storm, the disciples struggle to regain control of their fishing boat when a huge wave crashes over its bow, tearing the sail and pulling the craft dangerously close to the rocks in the left foreground. In the midst of this chaos, only Christ, on the right, remains calm, like the eye of the storm.
