Peace as a Counterpoint
When the painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1818, it hung beside Turner's depiction of the Waterloo battlefield after the fighting. The work was based on his studies in Dordrecht the previous year, during a journey through the Continent after the Napoleonic Wars. The contrast made the everyday life of peace as much a subject as war.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a beautiful painting by the British artist William Turner from the year 1818. The motif shows a fairy-tale golden glow over the harbor in Dordrecht, Netherlands (locally known as Dort). The sun shines softly over the many ships lying in the still water.

Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , the style of which can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. His art is among the world's most valued. In 2009, his painting was sold The Temple of Jupiter Panellenius for the equivalent of SEK 103 million, which is the second highest amount paid for a British work of art. In 2006, a Venetian landscape was sold by Turner for the equivalent of SEK 283 million.

There is a 2014 movie called Mr. Turner and is a dramatization of the life of the great, if eccentric, British painter.
