The story behind the motif
Canvas with the fantastic painting The Fire Boss, created in 1925 by the American artist George Lux.
After traveling and studying in Europe, Luks worked as a newspaper illustrator and cartoonist in Philadelphia. There he became part of a close-knit group led by Robert Henri. The group was the aggressively realistic Ashcan School of American art. They set out to defy the elegant values imposed by the influential National Academy of Design.
Luk's most famous paintings reflect the lives of the poor and hard-pressed on Manhattan's Lower East Side. This painting is a portrait of a "Fire boss", posing seated with a pipe in his mouth. The painting's dark color palette is effective in relation to the profession and at the bottom right we see Luk's signature in red.
