The story behind the motif
Canvas print featuring a beautiful painting from 1874 by the iconic artist Edgar Degas. The painting is called The Rehearsal Onstage and is one of two versions of the motif.
Of the two versions, this one is more freely executed, suggesting that it probably came second. Several of the figures in this pastel differ from those in the other version: The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage. Including the dancer seen from behind on the far left, plucking with his bracelet. Both works were executed over an ink drawing on paper, which was an unusual practice for Degas.
Edgar Degas was a French artist, printmaker and sculptor. In addition to portraits, his early pictures were often history paintings. Later, Degas also became interested in modern Parisian life and was influenced by the artist Édouard Manet. Degas' innovation and his sense of movement in the images make him one of the great of the early modernists of the late 19th century.
Knext time: Edgar Degas | Created: 1874.
