Birger’s Great Leap
After New Year 1886, Hugo Birger began preparatory studies for the painting – his first large-scale composition crowded with figures and movement. It was completed in time for that year’s Salon in Paris. Less than a year and a half later, on 17 June 1887, Birger died in Helsingborg, aged 33.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Scandinavian artists' breakfast in Café Ledoyen in Paris, created in 1886 by the Swedish artist Hugo Birger. The painting depicts the Nordic artists' celebratory breakfast at Café Ledoyen, where they used to gather on the Salon's opening day. The painting has an enormous wealth of detail.

Some of the people in the painting are: Allan Österlind (lighting a cigarette), Count Christer "Pirre" Horn (standing), the artist's wife Mathilda Birger (facing away and partially obscured), Hugo Birger (who in red hair and beard raises his glass), and Albert Edelfelt.

Hugo Birger was a Swedish artist who was mainly active in Paris. Several of Birger's paintings can be found at Gothenburg's art museum.
