An Image Built in Layers
Around 1890, Degas began placing tracing paper over older drawings, redrawing the contours and altering them in stages. In this particular pastel, he also joined two strips of paper – a trace of a working method in which earlier poses could be turned, combined and given new life.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with a unique and beautiful painting created by the iconic artist Edgar Degas. The painting is called Two Dancers, Half-length and on the left at the bottom of the picture, you can make out Degas' signature.

The picture is painted with pastell and carbon pencils on tracing paper and on it we see two dancers with identical, yellowish dresses and red, updo hair. Degas' choice of material comes through in the painting's unique texture.

Edgar Degas was a French artist, printmaker and sculptor. In addition to portraits, his early pictures were often history paintings. Later, Degas also became interested in modern Parisian life and was influenced by the artist Édouard Manet. Degas' innovation and his sense of movement in the images make him one of the great of the early modernists of the late 19th century.
