The inn became a marriage
When Michael Ancher came to Skagen in 1874, he stayed at Brøndums Gæstgiveri. There he met the innkeeper’s daughter, Anna Brøndum, herself a future artist. They became engaged in 1877 and married in 1880. A temporary artistic visit to the fishing village thus became both his permanent home and the beginning of one of the best-known artist couples among the Skagen painters.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Two fishermen by the famous Danish artist Michael Ancher. 

Michael Ancher is the Danish artist who became famous for his depictions of Skagen's heroic fishermen and their dramatic work at sea. Michael Ancher came to Skagen in 1874 at the age of 25 and he was the only one of the visiting artists to settle permanently in the city. At the beginning of the 20th century, Michael Ancher actively participated in the founding of Skagen's museum, but he died in 1927, the year before its official opening.
