The story behind the motif
An incredible view and panorama from Södermalm over Skepps and Kastellholmarna in 1895.
There are texts as early as 1288 that mention Stockholm's southern city area suthraemalm. However, the district's original name is Åsön, which still survives today as it gave its name to Åsögatan and Åsöberget. Åsön as a name was used well into the 17th century.
Södermalm began to be built on as early as the Middle Ages, in the 14th century. During industrialization at the end of the 19th century, Södermalm grew rapidly and became primarily a working-class residential area.
