Art as a Scientific Record
Auguste Mayer joined the French La Recherche expedition to Svalbard as one of its image-makers. The voyage of 1838–1840 was a scientific project involving studies of geology, meteorology and natural history, among other subjects, and the artists’ preparatory works became part of the expedition’s printed atlases. Arctic landscapes thus also served as scientific records.
